Title: Just learned something new....
Post by: TX-BlackKnight on November 03, 2003, 04:41:08 pm
About this old house.....
IF you have the fireplace going ( flue open ) and you turn on the central heating...the house fills up with smoke..REAL QUICK !!!

Seems the Central Heating system has a REAL powerfull suction motor and sucks the smoke out of the front of the fireplace faster than it can go UP the chimney.

Kinda looks like flying in IL-2 FB in the clouds right now...and everything has that wonderful fireplace smell now......

Looks like I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue.....

Really guys, I know you are laughing WITH me ....

If I may sir. I have burned wood all my life. And what you say is true. However the easy way to solve that is put an extension on the flue. That taller the harder it draws. Standard is two feet above peak of roof. I might be telling you something you already know and if so...then .... great!!S~TX-FlightRisk Black 3

the flue in our chimney is about a foot above the top of the burn box. If you mean the chimney top..it is 4 feet 6 " above the top of the roof now. I just climbed up there and measured it.Came up with solution. The Central Unit is in the hall. If I close the hall door and crack the window in the bathroom ( room closest to central unit ) it sucks air in thru the bathroom. LOL..It sounds like a freight train if I crack the window small enough.~S~BKFlame Broiled - Just The Way You Like Em'

Check your vents to each room, and the ductwork running to each one.   If the return-air is pulling that much in from the outside, then you have a big monster hole between the heater and a room somewhere.  The heated air is venting to the attic space and not into the house.   Just a thought.TX-Deck out.
