Post by: TX-BlackKnight on November 08, 2002, 08:03:49 pm
Just finished reading the last bunch of posts over on the Ubi IL-2 boards. Now people are screaming that wingtip smoke is a cheat. Just had to leave a reply on that one !
For a good laugh stop by and check out the boards some time....

I've been involved with WarbirdsIII for a year now and I see this same type of thing on the BBS over there 90% doesn't even warrant replies.  Ive seen alot of complaints on Flight Models  some warranted, some not,but no matter what the argument of the week may be  I do know that IL2 is about the closest thing to real flight that I've ever experienced on a computerand im grateful that we have such a highly detailed WWII sim to fly : )seems like Mr. Maddox really cares for historic authenticity, or as close as he can get to it, and that I appreciate. People are too damn quick to pick apart  things like IL2.  No nothings perfect  but IL2 sure is a sweet Sim to fly,and half the people complaining probably never plopped their butts into a cockpit of any kind :  ) as you TX guys well know  Situational Awareness and discipline that equates to ones successes in the air  it isnt always the superior ACM performance that wins the battle.  Erich Hartmann  made a statement in the book 'Blond Knight of Germany' : "Probably 80% of my victorie's my opponent never knew I was there until I was already firing" coming from a man of his caliber pretty much makes this a fact and not just another theory, and the leading russian Ace of that time had a strangely similar approach to his style.  I guess what im trying to say is that half the people that complain  usually get themselves into a bad situation, and when the Aircraft doesnt pull them out of it  it becomes a porked flight model,or the other guys is a cheater  Sorry  I rambled on so much! S~ Moooby,I think that the majority of online gamers just want it easy, regardless of what side they play. Few people like historical accuracy when they are on the wrong side of the accuracy.Take WW2 German and American tank battles for example, the Germans having the clear supremacy,  forcing the Americans to suffer heavy casualties to acheive their objectives. End of war results showed about 3 to 1 loss ration for American vs German tanks...who the hell would want to play a game as an American tanker? IL2 is solid though, except for minor issues I think that people with some historical knowledge and a bit of maturity can accept the game the way that it is for what it is...a good approximation. I have my own pet peeves about a variety of things in the game, (most notably the accuracy of the Big Gun Yaks) but on the whole, those things do not detract from the fun I have flying and playing along side TX. I have found that your comments on situational awareness are completely true...in TX we use very effective wingman coverage and generally do very well regardless of the game settings or the numbers of the enemy. Its always going to be the thinking pilots who use team work that are going to win in the long run. So to those that complain that their favorite AC is not modelled correctly (myself included regarding the FW190) I would say...get a wingman. In the end the plane doesn't matter in IL2, the pilots do...I say pilots because even as an incredibly skilled single player, when you are in a large DF and have no one to cover you, you will be shot down often. 2 Average pilots working together are probably more effective than a single Ace IMHO. I believe that it was also Hartmann that said "He who sees the other first has already won half the battle"S~TX-Zen"Black 6"TX Squadron CO

So now the "wingtip smoke" is a cheat??...what is next.."the Spit out the gunners port on the PE-8" cheat?...maybe the P-tube cheat is the uver one they didn't mention!....give me a break, this sounds like some posters in the general forum on Ubi are running slow machines and anything that might slow their box/gameplay down (or be suspected of it) is automatically a cheat. The only way I see the smokes as a cheat is that the UberWhiners are not remembering to turn the darn thing off before they get into a spot and are geing gunned down at a higher rate than normal!!....LIke I said...Give me a Break!!...Rocky...TX-CUDA on UBITX-CUDA on HyperLobby
