Title: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: TX-EcoDragon on August 10, 2009, 12:09:02 am Rise of Flight is a truly wonderful WWI flying experience, but hosting it takes not only a lot of bandwidth but a QuadCore CPU. Anyone who flew IL-2 should know about our long standing dedicated servers in that sim, and that we take pride in what we do. We wanted to do the same in Rise of Flight, but in order to make that possible, we need to upgrade our datacenter server. In order to facilitate this we need at least a core group of people interested in contributing financially to the cause, who are ready to have a top quality datacenter server in Rise of Flight.
Feel free to elaborate on your selected answer, but do vote in the poll too! P.S. Storm of War should be out within a year too! P.P.S If you selected "Very interested" please also respond with a post in this thread. Title: Re: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: TX-Thunderbolt on August 10, 2009, 12:11:11 am While RoF might be the catalyst for this, I really think it'll be handy as other newer sims (i.e. BoB:SoW) are released in the coming months.
...and I'd love to contribute. Title: Re: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: GOZR on August 10, 2009, 03:48:17 am http://www.gozr.net/iocl/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=732&p=2036#p2036
Updated there too. Title: Re: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: TX-Kingsnake on August 10, 2009, 05:12:00 am I'm voting to go in for a monthly subscription. I'm also in for "I’m happy to make maps and help in non-financial ways" but I can't vote twice in this election. Cash for 'ol Kingsnake is at a lifetime low. So what. This is worth it to me. Sounds like fun to me.
Title: Re: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: TX-Gunslinger on August 10, 2009, 12:23:16 pm As I've said for weeks, regularly:
I'm in for a monthly contribution and for whatever "seed" I can pull together to get this off the ground. I can't imagine that we are all going to pitch in 25$ and magically everything will just "happen". With four of us that's only $100. Seems like this will require more than that in startup. Eco posted this link previously: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ First, let me say that Rahman is not interested in switching datacenters, but just for the sake of having a little info so we can start thinking about what sorts of costs are out there, I just got a PM over a SimHQ with the following link: http://www.serverbeach.com/servers/index.php?category=all Serverbeach has this dealio going on right now. Q9400 2GB ram 2000 GB/Month I've used them before. The Texas datacenter worked for my BF1942 clan. $129/month +$10 for windows to run Dserver. If you chat with them sometimes you can get them to knock some money off. Also, I just looked the above server package but made it 4GB of RAM, WinServer2003, and the 100MBit port instead of ten, and after those things add to the monthly costs pretty quick - about 40-50 bucks right there. « Last Edit: August 01, 2009, 02:56:34 am by TX-EcoDragon » ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I did not think that was cost prohibitive - however I could be missing something. After 5 years of "using other peoples servers" I must say that it would be refreshing for those who contribute to be able to admin so that basic admin responsibilities don't fall on just 1 or 2 personnel. By basic admin - I mean: 1) restarting teamspeak 2) reconfiguring missions or settings 3) rebooting when necessary If we all pay our share, and accept a little additional responsiblity - then 4 to 6 "core personnel" can actually achieve self-sufficiency in keeping things going - AND "having some sort of life beyond the computer". S~ Gunny Gunny. Obviously if you guys decide to get a server elsewhere you will all have access to the box. The reason why I don't let everyone have access to remote the server it because it's a server. The more people with admin access, the more chance for bad things to happen to the machine. Having only a few people with admin access is a good way to eliminate the possibility of serious problems. Now, if we can get my friend to host the server from his house as I mentioned in my other post, everyone should have access to it as it will not be running all the services such as web, teamspeak, etc. It should only be running the game. See my post in the Squadron Chatter area.. Rah Title: Re: Who wants the OC3 in Rise of Flight? Please vote! Post by: TX-Gunslinger on August 10, 2009, 05:02:59 pm Totally understand Rah - and have always respected your position on this matter.
I sorta wanted to "put that out there" as an encouragement to those who might need encouragement. There are in fact benefits to "paying for the things you use" is my message. I've always been sympathetic to server owners/operators/admins in the community. 90% of users who fly don't have a clue as to the material and time costs borne by people who volunteer to "keep things up".
