Title: Processes? Post by: TX-Thunderbolt on August 14, 2009, 08:04:15 pm Here are a couple screenshots of the many processes I have running when I boot my machine. I know some of these are completely unnecessary, but not really sure which ones. If anyone could give me some guidance as to what I can turn off, I'd appreciate it.

And there is always FSautostart and his new prog AlacrityPC http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/I (http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/I) It tells you what and if you need it. And if you don't you can build a profile, or learn the tricks and then make a second OS installations with everything turned off at boot like I have it for gaming. I have no practical experience with the new Prog, I'm still using what FSAutostart has taught me, as of this time. I'm down to 22 or so with ROF running. I'm around 30 with IL@ I have more peripherals going with it. But ROF is such a minimal control issue. I don't need much, to fly it. Title: Re: Processes? I'll check out those links and see what I can turn off. In the past, I've just gone through and haphazardly turned off some stuff I thought I didn't need. Usually, I ended up turning off 6-10 processes. I'm just looking for a better expalanation and possibly a tool to make more seamless. It looks like FSAutostart might be just that. S! With XP FSAutostart does a better job of finding things to shut down. Post by: TX-Kingsnake on August 17, 2009, 08:39:09 pm ZoneAlarm pro, once paid for, has the option to kill processes, programs, and deny them internet access every time you start up plus the benefit of being a firewall. It also can kill or prevent dll files from doing the same since they can run themselves as an exe. Not only could you have windows media player (wmiprvse) start up in the background but it could start looking for updates and start eating bandwidth, not much, but it might then install updates. I am told that anyone spending a few hours can get into my computer so thats just how it is. What I am more concerned with is keeping automated things from getting out and getting what I can out of my hardware.
