Title: Mad Otter Games has acquired the Red Baron Series
Post by: TX-EcoDragon on September 15, 2009, 02:44:49 am
It seems like the competition between RoF and bed Barron just got a bit hotter:

I have no allegiance to RB - but of course, I hear about it all the time.  This is 2009 and RB was developed in 1998 - over ten years ago - which might as well be 50 in software years.

I got excited when I heard about Storm of War, 4 or 5 years ago.  Now a whole bunch of folks are excited because a Game Company has aquired at title?

I wouldn't hold my breath.....  Maybe it'll be done when my first Social Security check arrives....

Much todo about nothing.

Oh I don't know Gunny. . .even the hint of a new sim get's some of us riled up. . .even if it is 5 years off!

The sad thing is that if three of the same genre are release in a decade it's almost a miracle, two would be nice, and one might keep us busy! It's pretty pathetic what we get happy about in some cases.

Look at all the people still flying Falcon 4 (and paying 800 bucks to mod their Cougars to fly it most realistically), IL-2, and Red Baron! Compare that to the shooter world where Crysis is already old, and the followup games that have been released are too!

Well, I alluded to it a week ago, but while I claim to still have a desire to fly some IL2 (and actually flew a few sorties last week), most of the time I was doing it, I was thinking that it was just so..er...dated compared to RoF and that i wanted to get back in the open pit of the WWI kites.

Because of the MOD community and the little 'extras' they're bringing to the table in IL2, interest has been maintained and, it could be argued, expanded a bit. The reality is there is still some life in the old dog yet, but even the introduction of a flight sim with 1. A more isolated fan base (i.e. RoF in WWI), 2. Frought with bugs and 3. A VERY limited amount of multiplayer functionality, my attention has been swayed in the direction of the new engine.

I'm purely guessing here, but I'd wager a pretty penny that when BoB is released, it will be more polished, have better multiplayer netcode and expand on many of the things that RoF has been showing us for the last 5 months.

I'm excited about the possibilities. Now, as far as the subject of the original post? I dunno what to think.  ???

I'll wager multiple steak (or tofu) dinners on the following:

Oleg will smack down all those who have come before whenever he release SOW.  Why?

1. He has the most successfull experience.  His sim sold more copies worldwide than LOMAC, BLACKSHARK and even ROF COMBINED!
2. He quite simply is the Master in this venue.  Remember "Incompetent people don't know that they are incompetent"
3. He's mature enough not to "uncloak the ship" until it's built.
4. He's had his pick of the talent pool in Moscow for a decade
5. Now, that the others have released and MS is gone - He's had a good view of the market and his competitors product features.

We will all be playing SOW next year.

Yes true,
Microsoft isn't really a competition at list regarding FSX or FS9. I agree that it will be good. :)

The last 10 or 15 screenies that he's posted have been very nice.  I really like that "auto weathering/auto aging" stuff he's doing to the skins....

Until then - and just in case Oleg get's hit by a truck - it's ROF for me.  In my business we call that "risk mitigation" :)

Good to see ya Gozr

Ditto. RoF is fun out of the gate (albeit with issues) and with the rate of corrections and the updates coming from the dev team, it should be stellar in a few months.
