Title: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 26, 2010, 12:05:16 pm Installed - functional. I'll start benchmarks tonight after work.
More to follow....... Ahhhh ATI Catalyst - have not seen those screens in 5 years. S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-TOAD on January 26, 2010, 01:35:06 pm Your sharpness trick for IL2 recon no longer works with ATI!
One of the reasons, I followed you to Nvidea, and your tweaking ideas. But You will soon see the IQ with IL2 at least and ATI kicks Nvidea's ass. Even my old 1950 although has much lower FPS it's IQ is better than this 260 for sure. Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 26, 2010, 01:55:14 pm You can tweak many of this quality.. but the ATI profiles per game is real bad from ATI and that need to be addressed .. but now we will see the benchmarks with this good ATI card :)
I'm exited to see the results :) Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 26, 2010, 02:28:48 pm If ever there was a dAy I wish I could blowoff work..l
Later, s~ G Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 26, 2010, 04:12:31 pm ;)
Plz Gunny take some pictures please if you can to see the size etc.. ;) Thx. Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 26, 2010, 09:19:58 pm Very initial data - ATI AA and Sampling options scale differently. Even though frame intense - I found a setting (unplayable) which has absolutely NO TERRAIN SHIMMERING :)
Here we go.... These are the higher end tests mind you.... Thx Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 26, 2010, 10:36:14 pm Whoa - just noticed my CPU is running near stock clock.... must have reset when I changed boards.....
Hold on.... back to 4.00 GHz... S~ Gunny My initial feelings are it's where a 280 is, but it has a lot more options for Anti Aliasing/Shimmer control. I've been able to get almost reasonable clocks with no shimmer in the terrain at good AA.... it may be that this card is more tuneable to ROF - but it's too early to tell. Not much different than 280 - I think.... but let me get my test system back to the standards that I tested the 280 under... S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 26, 2010, 10:44:23 pm ok :) Are you under XP, Vista or W7 64 ? btw
Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 26, 2010, 11:21:21 pm Vista ala 64 ;)
S~ G Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 26, 2010, 11:44:23 pm Do you have w7 64 yet the cd ? ( my advice ditch Vista asap )
Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-TOAD on January 26, 2010, 11:57:06 pm Well sat on TS for last two hours, figured there be some activity, at least conversation.
Off to be now. Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 27, 2010, 12:22:24 am Hoo sorry TOAD i could of come but i didn't check !! :( Sorry..
Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 27, 2010, 12:23:08 am No don't have Win7 yet, I can get it for 30$ at the campus store though.
Sorry I missed you on TS, Toad... S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 27, 2010, 12:27:06 am Gotta go to bed.... replaced numbers above for correct CPU clock - tests.
It performs like 280, probably a wee bit better. Still not done.... too early to pass judgement. It's solid and functional..... S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 27, 2010, 12:29:10 am Good to know Gunny but the ATi should perform better .. I think you'll get a boost under W7 ;)
W7 is not an option is a must.. ;) Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 27, 2010, 12:34:44 am Ho! what is your 3DMark 06? that may indicate more the upgrade..
So what's up with the 280 ? now Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 27, 2010, 10:05:29 am Here's the best comparison I know from ROF:
Game settings = High on everything 1920 X 1200 Cards 16X AA 16X AF - Multisampling Texture filtering - Texture Quality to High Quality GTX 280 Effects Off - Multisampling Texture Filtering ON - High Quality - 16X16 Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg 7330, 179128, 26, 56, 40.920 5870 Wide Tent 8X = 16X AA - Catalyst AI Disabled Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg 8449, 179109, 28, 76, 47.172 So, at the same settings the 5870 performs a bit better. The supersampling AA mode for the ATI is hands down much better than the supersampling mode for Nvidea - but so for only on ROF. The supersampling mode absolutely and completly stops shimmering for ATI. With that said - I have not found a supersampling configuration that I would want to use online . Tonight - Plan to test briefly in 3D mark 06 (or whatever Gozr says).... and then on to Il2 S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 27, 2010, 10:33:24 am I'll try to take steps today to get Win7.
It's certainly on my list.... S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 27, 2010, 12:52:58 pm PS: watch what Thrud posted yesterday about 4.10 IL2

I'm on to testing Il2 tonight on 5870 - then I"m close to done. Oh - yeah - 3DMK06 results on 5870.... It's a bit on the low side.

My OS are 2 x server 2008R2 x64, W7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 9.10 x64 Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 27, 2010, 10:29:06 pm I can update my XP side and try it out......
What's ubuntu ? Is it an Operating System? I'll google it.. S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 27, 2010, 11:07:35 pm Yes, you can erase your XP with W7 clean install. ;)
Ubuntu is Linux, but doesn't matter.. ( this is an headake factory ) Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-TOAD on January 28, 2010, 03:21:45 am UBUNTU is very cool for non gaming.
I have it on a few machines, just playing around with it. It's completely open source, grass roots in ya face Bill sort of thing. Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: TX-Gunslinger on January 28, 2010, 11:36:27 am Hey Gozr,
Went to the trouble this morning to 3Dmk06 XP side. 21545 3D Marks 8439 SM 2.0 10162 SM 3.0 6086 CPU score Not much higher. Also, does it matter that I'm running the demo/non registered version of 3Dmk06? Only let's me test 1280 X 1024...... These newer cards are stronger at higher resolutions aren't they? S~ Gunny Title: Re: 5870 is here :) :) :) Post by: GOZR on January 28, 2010, 01:34:55 pm Yeas everyone is using the same, demo is fine, balance between CPU and GPU.
It doesn't see SLI |
