Title: My first impressions of CoD
Post by: TX-Gunslinger on March 28, 2011, 09:46:22 am
From my post at the 1C/UBI CoD forums - linked to SIMHQ thread containing my observations and impressions:

==============================================================================================
In the interest of sharing my very first impressions of CoD over the weekend, I think I should put up this link for you guys to see:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthre...opics/3249189/1.html (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthre...opics/3249189/1.html)

I didn't really go into that thread the beginning to review it - but as I flew it I just couldn't contain my emotions.

For all of you who find yourselves negative and skeptical - this link is provided in a friendly spirit, to prevent your statements from becoming permanent fixtures in others signatures over the next years.

I have often sensed such great relaxed confidence in Oleg and Illya's public comments and particularly the last few video's of Ilya. Do you notice how he sits there relaxed and confident of the product?

It's because he's actually experiencing the product not talking about it in third person.

Anyway, I'm a little embarassed of some of these comments - and my spelling - but this is how you will feel as you actually experience it, even with the few bugs and performance issues.

It's still there and you can search for it.  The forums there are in full on overdrive now so posts are getting buried very quickly.

Hi Guys!

Just got back in from travel.  Have an early morning (Fri) but all evening and Sat I plan to finish setting up my Target, really read the manual and optimize my system.

If you can get past the "HOOPLA" of stupid people the sim can be made to run just fine.

Since when did we ever, ever get a sim that didn't take weeks for everyone to figure out how to run at it's best.  Some bugginess but nothing any of us didn't expect.

I'll be around very soon :)  Great to see you and BroRights posts....

Here we are on Sun - 10 April and:

1 - Great patch released by 1C on Friday - significant performance improvement
2 - Great mod released by Kegety's on Saturday - another performance improvement due to turning of DX-10 effect SSAO.

I'm sure the forum experts are busy trying to find every little thing they can do to continue on "eating carrion".

Frames Rates are up, within a week of release and microstutters are down.

I'd say that all is going as usual :)

This is the very best flight sim I've ever experinced.

Things are coming up now, we need the SLI now and textures from within the Sim ( like a slider ala FSX )

But still things need to be re thought like the crashing I was expecting more like RoF .. Also it is what Oleg was saying that really pumped up the expectations and what i saw at start with the views setup , textures, dll's, 3d pilots, animations, damages and arts it really was not as i was anticipating but at list there is a great basic to built on as all first release of a sim .. mainly for a sim.
It's on a good way now ... hopefully.

Agreed :)

I've been flying campaign missions all day.  Now that the system runs better they are almost worth it.  Starting the engine, taking off and landing all have extra layers, which I like.

I wish there were a stall buffett sound like in the orig Il2.  I don't need no fancy pipes just clues....

I  agree the sound is a step back ..... for now ( but a good directionel effect. :) Buffet sound and more prop and winnnd is a must  but not this frame crackling thing... if the sound would be more worked as we did in RoF it will be a total overwhelming experience!!!!!

I thought you knew that. :)

You have to edit from there or it won't change a thing.

Maybe start a "sticky thread" with the optimations mod for COD for the long run.. for others that wont have to look for things and get frustrated imo

AWESOME!  Elvis is in the room .......

Ok - you need to get the mod here that turns off SSAO - Big DirectX 10 hit on frames, very little benefit - Gozr, I and everyone else is using this.  YOur frames will get clobbered down low without it:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3265101/Performance_improvement_mod_s_.html#Post3265101 (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3265101/Performance_improvement_mod_s_.html#Post3265101)

I'm running the following settings on my 5870 and in game:

In Game:

Damage Decals: High
Models: High
Visual Effects: High
Land Detail: Med
Land Shading: Low
Buildings Detail and Buldings Amount: Low
Forest: Low
AA in game: OFF
Shadows ON
Grass:  OFF
Roads:  On

On video card have
Morphological AA On
8X AA
8X AF
AA Adaptive Multi Sample

Getting 50-80's in channel dogfights...

I tried it for a bit. In a few months I will put some more time into it. Complex engine management looks complex. I think it is headed away from air-Quake where everything is mapped to a macro and towards what I imagine is more realistic, having to manage an aircraft. You get these guys that want full realism but when they get more realistic aircraft systems to manage they straight away set it all on macros. I can see why there are still IL2 servers up in Hyper lobby since it really was a hit with the guys that weren't really into piloting when it came down to it. IL2 provided a fantasy that you could pull all that off and be an amazing aviator at the same time but we all know how good it was for the time. Even with the limited aircraft complexity provided by IL2 it still kept a large number of people away. This next generation of Cliffs of Dover looks challenging. Almost all the flight simulators are headed that way, lots of cockpit interface. The thing with the modern ones is the interfaces are little computers that make flying and targeting easier.

I wonder how combat effective I could be against someone with all macros while I am flipping switches and turning dials and managing prop pitch. With IL-2 I was up in short order. This one has much to learn. I look forward to the learning curve. I thought I would check in here. I will be back again in a few months.

Nice screen shots guys, this looks nice.

Glad you got it!

Well, I didn't put everything on macros - but I did put flaps on a slider - or rod (think Cessna throttle).  When I pull the the thing back the pilot turns the wheel one way - and when I push it forward he pushes the wheel in the opposite direction.  Somewhere around center he stops turning.

The mouse over the clicks are not enjoyable with the arrow showing not smooth like something very well done on A10 from DCS.. but it's a start ..

Yep Gunny, I think some things are better mapped that way, like the flaps. After the few hours I have in a plane I couldn't pull any advanced maneuvers and keep the plane managed. There is a lot to be done in something as simple as an immelman. As it is now I either don't understand the click-pit interface or it doesn't work well. Maybe I'm accustomed to FSX and DCS.

Overall I have an odd subtle feeling I just bought an X-Box ported flight simulator. Something I can't quite explain the technicalities of. I hope I am wrong about that.

You inspired me to fire CoD up a few days ago.

It's really getting there.   The two things they are working on that will bring me back to it on a regular basis are:

- Finish the advanced graphics mode
- Current flight model tweaks, particularly those for high altitude.

I just checked the TUSA forums and saw Voxman is flying CoD exclusively.  Many others are on the fence right now waiting out this painfully slow part.

Still, it has so many great features and is 85% there.  Such a shame that the remaining 15% is so important to me.
