You might need to act fast though, as the NvNews forums are always busy.

I fugured $100 wasn't too bad and the dude has two of them. I've gotten a few things from individuals over there in the past and am still looking for a decent last-gen card for my dad's machine I'm trying to put together (not sure if I told you guys about that) and saw this thread when looking.

My Mom and Step-dad came down from Michigan 2 weeks ago to visit. I hadn't seen them in almost 8 years though we stay in touch all the time. Anyway, he's a pilot and has been a strong motivation since I was 8 regarding aviation, aviation history and such. For the last 8 years I've been telling him and wanting to show him about REAL flight sims. Well, needless to say, he was blown away when I showed him IL2 and RoF.

To shorten the boredom of this post suffice it to say, he is really interested in dabbling (I know once he's in, he's in all the way...that's how he is).

They have one pc in their house and my Mom uses it for work. Plus, I can't afford to help them out with a decent RoF rig right now. I DID, however, dig in all the nooks and crannys of my closet, and talk to some other folks and was able to scrounge almost everything I need to make a "good" IL2 rig that might run RoF too if it really needed to.

Anyway, I still need a PSU and video card. If you know anyone that might have a last-gen GPU (8800GTS or something in that neighborhood) or a decent 500w+ PSU that they don't necessarily want an arm or a leg for, let me know eh? My uncle and a couple their friends up in Mi are old pilots too and he said once they got a peek at it they would likely join the whole mess too (they're the ones with the money). The only things I told him he'd have to supply are the monitor and rudder pedals. Sabeth had a case and I had scrounged most of the rest. I also sent him the Akers-Barnes pit plans since he's better at woodworking than most carpenters I've ever seen (he built their house about 30 years ago) and should be able to use them and implement something cool with a few small modifications.

My Mom said they already went to Ebay and bid on some CH pedals and will probably go ahead and get a 22" or 24" monitor next week in anticipation. She said he's getting more and more excited.

I've got a plan for this server which looks something like this:

1. Install and configure existing system.  DONE - it's working like a champ - with me able to login and play on my LAN (thus saving precious internet bandwidth)
2. Test MP config within Squad/Friends on existing hardware and current/new ROF ded features.  Still need to do the netlimter tests and see what the new bandwidth requirements are and what the effectiveness of the ROF bandwidth limiter.
3. See if anyone in our squad is able/interested in making/editing/helping with missions. If own squad is not interested, then attempt to find collaborators outside the squadron.
4. Upgrade "ROF" server with new hardware.... Quad vice Duo
5. Put up Server for community access
6. Analyze server usage
7. Upgrade internet connection

After thinking about all this, I think it's best for me to wait right now TB, on more hardware.

Like mine i have my SLI/quad server but here the most important for ROF since really ROF server is very ridiculously demanding..
 the most important before all.

7. Upgrade internet connection see what you can get...

Well, I've been the last time I monitored network traffic on my dedicated, it did not take as much bandwidth as back when Eco/Sandman/WWBrian tested it.  I took a lot of data then.

Then there are the new bandwidth limiters in ROF setup.

While I could upgrade my service, it's too early now.  I've been through the wringer with populating OC3 - and trying to help populate Normadie Niemen.  What I've learned is - "Don't buy the bandwidth until you find out IF your folks will actually use it".  I'm sure you'd agree with me Smiley

When I open up the server, and it's populated for a few weeks, it's easy enough to bring in the second line.

That's what I'm thinking now anyway.  It would be so frustrating to spend even more money and time than I already have, only to look at an empty server.  So, in order to minimize my frustration and expectations, the bandwidth will scale with the "crowd".

BIggest short term problem now is quality missions - and I don't see anyone volunteering yet to help with those.  Hopefully, someone will.

Gunny what is your internet at the moment ? and how much in your area?
Thx

Yes we tested a lot before on my server as well and 1 MB up was way too short at the time.. but now i don't know but probably still on the high side.. alas.

My current is only 1 MB up.  But like I keep saying, why buy more bandwidth for what looks to me might be an empty server.

In December, I tested in retail running dedicated on my PC, and was able to host a full server 5 v 5 (dedicated not coop) - with no lag.  This was before the packet limit implementation in ROF.

I don't know what the effect of the packet limit is, and am determined to find out soon.  We have the netlimiter-pro to use to monitor it.

Anyway, back to beta-testing for me now.  More later.

So, finding myself in a fleeting moment of optimism - I'd like to ask you Gozr:

Do you think 12MB vs 4MB L2 cache has any impact on ROF performance for dedicated server?

I'm thinking right now that Q8400 is very cheap - and I would probably not notice the difference between Q8400 and Q9550.  I think with Q9550 is overkill for 1 Mb/s or even 2 MB/s bw upload.

So, I'm internet bandwidth and not processor limited.

Yes the internet is the key... Q8400 should be very fine.. 1 mb is low this days i have 1 mb up and i'm looking for more but nothing around yet.. 1 mb is low when a server is running and we are surfing the web or movie watching in the same time..  Sad
I 'm curious to see the prices in the Texas area.. Cable/ ADSL ?

...and am still looking for a decent last-gen card for my dad's machine I'm trying to put together (not sure if I told you guys about that) and saw this thread when looking.

I have an update on my little scavenger hunt re: my Dad's pc. I picked up an 8800GTX 896mb card today on another forum for $80. He said it's still under warranty from Evga too... bonus.

I'm still looking for a compatible PSU for this thing though. I have an older Ultra X-connect 500w, but the whole reason I have it in the closet is because I thought it was failing and replaced it a couple years ago. So, I'd hate to put it in his machine for it only to fail in a couple months. If anyone has a lead on a decent PSU, I'd be muy grateful.

Well I have an old 600w Seasonic S12 your welcome to.   Its close to 4 years old but it was still running strong when either the CPU or mother board ceased all brain activity a couple months ago.   Also have an old Praetorian case.  The only problem with is the ports in the  hidden flip up door at the top are broken.  I would have liked rebuild it but there is no room for a mega heat sink.
