Ok, this isn't as thought provoking as Kingsnakes' last post, but I thought I would throw it out there anyhow.
It's summer of 1986, and Deck has just earned his driver's license. (ok, now showing my exact age!) On the night of his birthday, he and friends go to the local cinema and watch Mavrick and Goose whoop up on some Migs. He starts thinking about the Navy. Later that following school year, a Navy Top Gun pilot visits the school for recruiting purposes, and negates almost everything the movie had going for it. No Kelly McGuiness, No Karaoke, No Fun. Personally I thought the pilot needed to lighten up.
Shortly thereafter, Deck gets home from school, plops on the couch, and starts to immerse himself in the world of MTV. What's this? Sammy Hagar and the bros. Halen have a new video out? The song was "Dreams", and the Blue Angels were the sole subject of the entire video. I can remember getting up from the couch, walking to the TV, turning up the volume, and standing there with my jaw open for about 5 minutes after the video was over. Call it media hype, call it a fad of the time, call it stupid, call it what you will, I thought it was awesome. I never followed thru with any kind of piloting or military career, but that is a whole different story for a different time.
Thinking back on this event today, I promptly went on a search and sure enough, I found the video. If you have never seen it, check it out. If you have seen it, be aware that it is out there and can be found easily enough. It doesn't have quite the effect it did back then, but it still shows tight flying and some very nice aerobatic footage.
I searched for "van halen dreams" and found a variety of sources. Good Luck!
TX-Deck out.
