Gentlemen,

Take a look at this thread:

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=yzrjf

Wag's strongly implies the dedicated server will be released soon....others think he means something else. I have asked for clarification.

WHAT YOU SAY!?!?!?

I sent the following PM to Wags...
TO: Wags SENT: 9/5/2003 1:33:07 PM  SUBJECT: Dedicated Server Patch Wags,              Thanks for the information on the dedicated server patch being released soon... Without having to post 10 million answers in the public forum....We do not have the dedicated server. Are you saying that the dedicated server will be released to the public soon OR are you saying that the very few people who have the dedicated server will receive a patch soon? Our squadron is paying $200+ per month for a dedicated server on a great connection to host a 24/7 FB server.. Hosting via the gui remotely is not a good solution... Will the public get the dedicated FB server soon?? Thanks, TX-Rahman http://www.txsquadron.com

I get the impression that he is indeed talking about the dedicated server being released. There really is no other explanation for the statement. If only a handful had it already, and only those handful would be getting a patch, he would not have mentioned it to the general public. Plus the fact that he says it would be released if no other issues arise tells me it is done and they just need a little more testing under the 1.11 patch.I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Comrades, it is an honor to speak to you today on the maiden voyage of our motherland's most recent achievement. (The FW190D9)It reminds me of the HEADY days of Sputnik and Yuri Gregarin when the world trembled at the sounds of our rockets. They will tremble again at the sound of our silence. The order is: Engage the Silent DriveA great day comrades, we sail into history. Soyuz Narasimi Raspublikt SvputnikTX-ZenBlack 6

I'm curious, what exactly does a dedicated server mean for us? I know nothing of hosting issues. Besides reducing bandwith, ease of admin ability, etc., what can and will happen with this?Could we host more than one game with different settings? Does it make the scripting run better or open up new types of commands? Reduce lag? More?Just wondering...

The biggest difference is lag and playability. Console servers do not require the GUI to run, all they do is process the actions of the game without needing to translate all that to graphics. It means that you can run a dedicated server on much less powerful machinery and on slower connections...the difference between a few people hosting on OC3 connections vs hundreds or thousands hosting on cable or DSL lines. In many cases the console runs in the background so you can actually do light work on your game server machine at the same time you have a furious dogfight broiling in the server. You don't load the pure game, therefore resource requirements are considerably lower. It also means stability...console servers are generally very robust, very reliable and stable...this translates to higher uptimes for game play which is a great thing. Scripting is more usable since there are less variables to turn into graphics on the host machine...the list can go on and on. Depending on the console, you can host multiple sessions on one box, get reduced netcode traffic and have more control over daily operations, among other things. If UBI has any snap to the dedicated server design (and apparently they do), we will have the functionality we have needed for so long in a tight package that is easy to manage. For serious game hosts, console is the only way to go, everything else is half assed at best. I sincerely hope that UBI puts this out next week...90% of my frustration will be absolved since the thing I worry about most is the performance of the server. TX-ZenBlack 6

Thanks Zen. It sounds like a godsend.BTW, Wags has posted that both the 1.11 patch and the dedicated server patch are ready and will be released Monday or Tuesday--pending no serious flaws discovered in testing before then.

Console servers simply rock. Not having to run graphics and manually click thru all the options to run a game...1) means you can use a third party app to launch/relaunch the server if the box crashes or for some reason the server hangs.  (ServerDoc is an example)2) remote admin is a snap, as there is very little video information to transfer, and usually can be done via Telnet or other terminal emulation3)if we determine that the netcode is efficient and the box we host on can handle it, more than one server may be possible.  this could mean two or more maps running with different settings, planes, rules, etc...The list goes on and on, I'm only adding to what has already been said.   Tis a wonderful day if UBI comes thru for the community at last.   When did we first start hounding them for this, over a year ago?TX-Deck out.
