Now that assault weapons are back on the market and legal to own Smiley I was wondering where I could buy one? Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about getting an mp44 or mg42 or even a good 'ol ak-47. Perhaps there is a good starter or beginner's assualt rifle since I don't own a fire arm. The elections are coming soon and I heard this could effect the availability of small arms w.m.d.

Any thoughts for a n00b living in a dense urban area looking for target shooting or home safety arms capable of maiming several thousand beer cans at a time?

Herr Kingsnake, the MP44 and MG42 if you want o ind those I sugest you go to your local bookstore and pick up a copy of "Shotgun Times" or some similar gun "for sale" type publication. The two vintage weapons will usually be found in the collectors arms section if they are there at all. Keep in mind that these weapons were banned BEFORE the so called weapons ban...and still are. If you are able to locate one of these keep in mind that if it is in working condition...ie,FULL AUTO.....you will have to apply for a class 3 firearms liscense. You have to have a valid liscense FOR EACH FULL AUTO GUN that you own...and last I checked they run $250-300 per year, and are good for only one year...and have to be renewed every year that you own the weapon. Besides the hassle of maintaining the valid tag for each weapon you have to be approved by your local chief of police in order to get the tag in the first place......Personally, I would not own a piece of crap AK-47! They are under powered in the 7.62 caliber when compared to the 7.62 NATO round. If you want something with some good knock down power that is very reliable under adverse conditions might I suggest a Belgian FN-FAL. This gun is very reliable as it has proven itself on the African Continent in many conflagrations over the years. You can usually find this gun at a reputable gun shop here in Texas, but am not sure that you will be able to find anything such as this out there in the RepubliK of UberFornia...a good plinker that you can use to ventilate as many beer cans as you want...and the occasional PCP crazed crackhead that is on a roll behind your house....is the Ruger Mini-14. This is a scaled down version of the M-14 that is light, reliable, and relatively inexpensive. Comes in caliber .223 so when the stuff hits the fan you can use M16-A2 ammo in it as well. It is also easily converted from single shot to selective fire (three round burst) by your local under the counter gunsmith if you so choose. It comes stock with either a three or five round magazine, but 20-30-40 round mags can be picked up a gunshows. WAIT, since the "BAN" lapsed you can now get these good mags at any good gunshop.....at least here in Texas!TX-Cuda

.....forgot this, if you want to do some housecleaning just go get a 12ga shotgun...load it with 3inch magnums loaded with buckshot.....another good choice is a reproduction M1  in 7.62 from Springfield Armory. With this one you can drop 'em at 1000yds with no trouble.and lastly, a Barrett in calibre .50 will drop 'em at over 2000yds, but might run a pretty penny!TX-Cuda

It appears the governator is not planning to lift the assault weapons ban in Kalifornia. After inquiring about the matter I feel I may have been placed on a big brother list of whakos and irregulars. I'm with Eco on his idea to relocate to Canada, where I can buy a viper, King Cobra, and an assault rifle. TX-KingsnakeBlack 6

...nah, don't have to move.Just do as I suggested and get a Remington 870 pump shotgun...pull the plug that limits it to three shots....and load it up with OO(double ought) buckshot....use that for inside the house as a rifle might go through a wall or person and injure someone else. For outside use to quell looting and take out the occasional drug fiend on a PCP induced homicidal rage get the Springfield Armory M1A1(civvy version of the M14) or the same companies 7.62nato caliber version of the M1.Put a scope on either  of the rifles so you can take out the malcontents from the comfort of your front porch or balcony. To get proficient in leading a running target(not carrying a TV or stereo) you can practice by playing the Call of Duty WW2 sim. This will allow you to save on the cost of ammo until you really need it.If you do purchase a rifle or pistol for that matter I used to do my own reloading down here and have dies for .44MAG,.357,9mm,.273,.308(7.62NATO),7mmMAG,and .300WinMAG....save your spent shell cases!TX-CudaMaker of Garrot SHotshells since 1979

Most of that sounds just like home!I have dealt with this guy who has damaged our storefront, sexually harrassed my mom when he is sober, and attempted to pull her in his shop one night when he wasn't sober, dumped heavy equippment (a large bathtub, kennels etc) from the back of our property on the front step of our store using his tractor, shattered our store windows by driving out of our driveway after backing his truck up to the front door and flooring it so that the gravel in our parking lot will shell the facility, shot me with a paint ball gun as I locked the door of our store, harrassed me when I am in town, including driving his car up curbs in front of me. . .yadda yadda yadda  SO one day after a while of dealing with this guy, and his ever increasing habit of doing ever more significant thigns, after I began to feel that he was a direct threat to my mom I did something. I was inside our shop and my mom was getting the mail.  She had just walked in the door when he came in (it was 10pm, he lives at his store), he stopped just inside the front door, and asked if she "still didn't want to go out with" him, and she was scared by hearing the door open jumped a little and shouter "Yeah I'm Sure" and he then lunged for her. I was behind the counter, now standing, but he didn't seem to know I was there, I was already prepped to jump the counter as soon as he came in, and did at this point. I lept from the counter, landed just next to him and at teh same time pushed him towards the door, but when I did this is sent him flying into the wall next to the door and this bench we had and he cut his head and arm on it, and said he broke rib. We had called the cops countless times before, had a restraining order at one time, everything that was within our power to legally do. This night, when we called the cops you know what they do? The same they always  do: They look for bruises on my mom, and a video camera or multiple witnesses that attest to who might have made them. If those things aren't around there is nothing they can do and they seem irritated that we are wasting their time. Well, things were going that way this night too until the guy shows up and says I attacked him. I get cuffed and sent to the back of the car. . . more or less threatened and intimidated for an hour then driven to the local goverment center (40 miles away), when we get there they then have me call someone for a ride. The next day all the things he does are ramped up another level. . .I was at my wits end. . then he was evicted for un-paid rent, he burned parts of his building down, spraypainted profane remarks about the landlord and the new tenants all over it, and dumped his trash (rockes, trees etc as per his business) all over the street and the property. But he did leave! That was teh good news. . . the bad was he didn't go far. We still deal with him now and then, he drives through our parking lot and does donuts to throw our rocks, or shouts out his window at us when we are in town, but it's a big improvement. . .So I guess I could have used lethal force, and solved that problem, but for some reason I think that might not bode well for my future. . .I live with an MD who is in the psych dept. or our local  State Prison, she sees and knows of countless people locked up for defending themselves, their family, or their property against people like this, or wives who were beaten for 20 years. . .who one day put a  stop to it. . .In short. . . I sure don't feel like I can protect my home now. . . and unless I intend to use lethal force (and even if I do) Im certainly not beyond litigation and imprisonment. . . What's an Emu to do?S!TX-EcoDragonBlack 1TX-Squadron XO

Thing is, as far as i know in the states (correct me if im wrong), you use lethal force there, and you have no victim to file a complaint!

I think it is funny that Emu, the truely pacifist mild mannered vegan, gets put in cuffs when someone steels his girlfriend's bike or threatens his mom. IMO you were well within your rights to protect yourself and your loved ones. I'm glad I don't own a firearm. I own a compound hunting bow with big game razor sharp heads and I've pulled it out before enraged. I've put vandals in my sights like a besieged Saxon from behind the parapet wall. I was gonna get medieval on that mother fu*ker.  I also have a  Zulu spear incase I need to get downright savage. I really don't want to get a 20th century weapon because I've felt myself go over the boiling point. I don't know if it was testosterone or primal instinct that pushed me past the brink. I know that by my nature I have no intentions of looking for trouble, but like Emu, if trouble finds me one does what one feels they have to. And in Emu's case, he was better off without a fully automated weapon. Someone close to me is serving life in prison for self defense. He had a .22 in his hand when an assailant came at him. He warned him repeatedly and at point blank was compelled to pull the trigger.  His only contact with the outside world is through the jail cam. It is an interesting political lever for the n.r.a. If you are like me and prefer not to own a gun, or if you have a formidable arsenal like Cuda, it is a worth while point of consideration. TX-KingsnakeBlack 6

....Just read the tale that our Emu and his Mom had to put up with due to the psycho in the business near them. Don't get me wrong here as I am sure that at one time or another we have all been pushed to...or over the brink of rational thinking by someone..or something...that demonstrates that in most cases we are powerless in todays society to either defend our property or loved ones when such actions are taken against us. Due largely in part to Tort laws in most states you almost have to be beaten to within an inch of your life, watch someone break into your home or place of business, watch as a loved one is physically threatened or assaulted...BEFORE you might have the chance of using some weapon on the perpetrator to stop such actions and not get either locked up for a long while or if that is not the case taken to court for "Violating" the offenders rights.    I for one would have no qualms if I was in Emu's situation about spraying the idiot child that was harrassing them with a hefty dose of capsaisin spray for starters...perhaps breaking some blunt object like a baseball bat upside his skull...and perhaps making sure that he had the .22 cal pawn shop special laying next to him when the law showed up. Like the previous poster replied dead perps can't sue...this is correct..BUT, his poor family will probably have some slimeball attorney banging on their door as soon as the news of his death is announced on the 10PM news. Sad state of affairs indeed!    I have a few guns and some re-loading equipment here.NOT a big arsenal as Kingsnake thought by any means...but just what I need to hunt birds maybe once a year (12ga shotgun)...another 20ga remington that I used to shoot skeet with on the local range (our pasture!)..a.357 Ruger six shooter that I use for target shooting...and two 7.62nato guns...one for hunting and the other for....when.....the....time comes.........that martial law is imposed as the Red leaning Liberals come here to Texas to try and impose their Socialist agenda on we poor free thinkers...and...and...and..when those black helicopters that I know are watching me at night, even though I can't hear them because they have those stealthy rotors I heard the Colonel talking about at the meeting the other night when he was telling us about how they listen to us discuss their agenda and plans for us through the windows with lasers from the gunners doors of those helos...[[SLAP!!]]..man, got carried away there for a minute...Seriously, if you can't expect the law to help you Eco it truly is a sad state of affairs. I guess they would be more attentive AFTER either you or your Mom are seriously injured or worse. I don't advocate the use of deadly force unless it is absolutely the last resort....and then only if you have been properly trained in the use of such force. Here in Texas we are able to train and be certified to carry concealed handguns.Since the inception of this law that allows citizens to be certified to carry I can think of NOT ONE CASE where a perp was shot by a LICENSED gunholder either in self defence or to protect property where a grand jury came back with charges...The only gun I have that is not locked up either in a safe or gun closet is my shotgun which is under my bed in case of a night break in.....and even if there was one the person better be a very big threat before I'll drop him as I don't want to lose everything to some lawyer or pity pot jury....TX-Cuda

I have been told that same thing copper. . as was my dad who was held at gunpoint in his house a few decades ago. . .in both instances (and now a third) by police officers. This route isn't really first on my list, and even if it were, certainly the legal retribution that his family would employ would be significant.I understand just what King is saying.  .  . and over the years have had many things in the house from slingshots to FN-FAL's (I also have a nice spear collection myself!!) and I msut say that in those moments that things really get crazy, it is certainly nice to be deprived of such weaponry. I would hate to think of what a person in a similar situation, with even less EMU (head in the sand) characteristics AND a loaded assault weapon might do.BTW, I was trained in the execution of lethal force, by Sensei "Malibu" as I called him, and at one of the only US facilities to train people in Ninjistu. . . I was told by a lawyer friend that that would work against me. . . as if it elevates your chances of being a perpetraitor. But whatever. . . GRRBRAAAWKS!TX-EcoDragonBlack 1TX-Squadron XO

Well, to clarify somewhat for how things go down in Canada.  Being on the law enforcement end of things, we are limited to what we can do based of the information we receive, evidence at hand, and if we have reasonable and probable grounds to believe an offense has occured.  There is always two sides to every story, and barring physical evidence to support an assault etc, we have to try and figure out who is telling the truth, and being that there is usually two different stories to every event, someone is always lying to us.  Always.  Nobody really tells the truth anymore.  Then, the Crown Attorny (prosecutor) has to determine what guidlines apply for them to prosecute, and the judges have guidlines to follow as well.  To put it bluntly, the police officers usually do their job to the full extent they are allowed, and the rest is the courts.  Yes, that means the courts dropping the ball repeatedly and the victim not getting his/her due cause.  Here in Canada, a person is allowed to defend themselves or their property, but not too exceed what is necessary to do so.  It is frustrating for me when the old timers on the job talk of the day when they could literally pound the justice into someone achingly deserving of it, when today, we even say the wrong thing and we go thru two weks of a complaint process.I definately sympathize with you and your mother Eco, and was ignorant to how the law works in California......thought the victim always came out on top.  Several variables could have played out there tho, such as the attending officers not being too sharp on whats legal and whats not, or simply lazy and looking for an easy out of what looks like a long paper-ridden call, or a dickhead who is very convincing when to comes to spinning the yarn out for the police.  As for the continued assholishness of him (thats a Dwight Youkum word), for continued harrassment to be dealt with properly, everything has to be documented, and i mean everything....time, place, whats damaged/type of harrassment, and call police everytime and demand a report taken at the least, that way a pattern/timeline developes.  Also...the most important, his behaviour must be witnessed.Remember, every cop (me included) will usually look for the easy way out, and thats not due to being lazy, its due to the extent everything has to be carried out/followed up on, and thats thanks to the defenders....those c*cks are what make policing a very frustrating and time consuming job. Here in Canada, an impaired driving charge can take 3 hours for the paper work...a domestic assault as long as 4-5 hours, with the end result being some parasitic lawyer finding some minute error, and getting the accused off.I probably digressed here, as i just got of a busy midnight shift dealing with a whole lotta college/university kids who, for whatever reason, know more about the law then i do, even tho they never attended a law class or went thru police college. As for firearms....I own a .45 flintlock, a 16 guage cooey break action shotgun, and a .22 semi auto rifle....all except the flint for hunting, and i have absolutely no idea how people justify the need to own a assault rifle, or any other menacing type of weapon.  Have yet to meet a person who takes that good ol AK-47 out for a afternoon of pleasure hunting.....nor why you would need a 30 round banana clip to get that deer.  If your that bad of a shot....don't hunt.  What I do know of things in the states is a lotta people hiding behind a constitution that says they have the right to bear arms etc (but most never finish it....to form a militia to rise up against an oppresive gov't).  I know im treading on dangerous ground here, and im not an American, but it is obvious to those of us outside the U.S just by the news.Think that line should read "have the privlage to bear arms"...one can lose that privlage, but try taking away a "right".Eco, if you have any questions on things you can do to better your cause against this jarhead, we can yap away on comms sometime....diferent countries i know, but many things similer!

....Good comments Copper. One thing that really hits the nail on the head so to speak is why in the world anyone would want to take an AK out into the field with a 30rd clip supposedly for the purpose of "hunting". If you can't hit what you are going to shoot with one well placed shot why bother? I have always been a believer that you ought to be able to hit your target with the first round....always be sure of your target before pointing the weapon at it...and most importantly,if your gonna hunt you had better be prepared to eat WHATEVER you decide to drop the hammer on.   My late Grandfather taught me the last one at a very young age by example!     One last comment on what Copper said. With the time it takes to do the paperwork and reports after an officer of the law makes an arrest,I wonder if that is a contributing factor in some of the officers in...say Houston...that seem a little short of fuse? If I was in that position I would certainly be frustrated by having to do limitless reports.....and seemingly being limited in what I could do to decrease crime in my jurisdiction in order to make sure that the lawyers are kept at bay....TX-Cuda

I don't blame the officers, per se,  however it really wouldn't take to much to see that this guy is insane. . . as far as witnesses go, there should be plenty to attest to at least that much. On a nearly twice daily basis I would hear him cussing out one of his customers. . . usually a little old lady who came in to buy a garden gnome. . .he also beats his kids and I had called the cops many-a-time about that too. . . In any case, he is no class-act.If he was a puppy he'd be in the pound. . . that's for sure.S!TX-EcoDragonBlack 1TX-Squadron XO

I watched the Bowling for Columbine documentary last night and it put the entire gun issue into focus. It also compares the U.S. to Canada regarding the gun issue.TX-KingsnakeBlack 6
