VVS Alive and well in Crimea

Last night I was looking up some ancestry information.  Many of my family came from the Ukrane but were German immigrants to that area during the 1800’s.  In particular the city of Landau, renamed after the war to Sirokolanivka.  Any way I was google earthing the area of Sirokolanivka and Odessa and dropped over to check out some familiar bombing routes from the Crimea maps.  I was surprised by the number and size of the military bases there, although most appear to have been greatly down sized or abandoned, it was is interesting to look at.

And lots of naval vessels in what must be the most poluted water i have ever seen.  Might just be an illusion of white caps or something but it just looks bad.

Interesting to see all of the Helo's at both Saki and Kaca don't have their main rotors folded. Note that most all of them are not fully in the locked position for flight either. Could be a bunch of "hangar queens" in disrepair....TX-CudaMinister of Information

Crimea, was originally Russian territory signed over to the SSR of Ukraine in the 50's I beleive as a sign of goodwill by Kruschev for the tragedies Stalin did to her people in the 30's and beyond.I think it was Peter the great who conquered this from the Turks way back.My family is from the area aswell. Much of eastern Ukraine is industrial and remains heavily populated by Russians. Infact the Russian federation still operates a huge naval base on Ukrainian soil in Sevastopol I beleive home to the black sea fleet.Those are some nice mig-29's though.
