I actually putting together a small LAN box and am able to get some decent stuff for relatively cheap prices. My question is: If I opt to put XP Pro on this box will I be o.k. installing a 4gb set of RAM (2x 2gb sticks)? I realize XP will only recognize slightly over 3gb, but if that's the only issue then I shouold be good to get the 4gb set instead of the 2gb set...right?

The 4gb set is available now and is almost the same price as the 2gb set, so if the only issue is a small amount of unrecognized RAM, then I would still benefit from the additional RAM XP would recognize over the 2gb set...right?

I'm looking at an e8400, a micro-ATX mobo (P5GC-MX/1333 945GC chipset), RAM (2GB or 4GB), HDD and VC (probably an 8800 series).

It's my intention to use this box for a couple upcoming get-togethers and use it to spread the flight-sim joy to a few friends then hand it to my Wife or one of my kids. Currently they don't use their pc's for anything too strenuous, but this little rig should still suffice for some more modest gaming as well.

Input?

Well, I believe you will be just fine.

My Dell XPS 1710 (which I'm typing on right now, in my hotel room in Slidell, Louisiana), came with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM (which in 2006 cost me a ton of money).

The only operating system I've ever used on this laptop is XP.

The only downside, as you've said is that it will only recognize 3.25 GB of RAM....

I'm running 4 Gigs on a dual boot of XP32 and WIndows7. I didn't notice any improvements in games with the 3.00 gigs of RAM in XP, but I do notice it in things like Photoshop etc. I'm sure there is a slight boost in most apps though, and certainly no troubles to be had by going with 4 gigs. With the prices of DDR2 right now, I think anyone buying RAM should get 4 gigs!

You know Gunny, if your in Slidell,  mud bug season should be starting.  I looked and my old crawfish shack but it seems to have fallen. Someone should be able to direct you to a good place to bit some tails and suck some heads though…  Mmmm hot crawfish., I miss that.

Yep. Some spicy crawfish ettouffe and a cold beer...mmmmmm.

Thanks for the replies guys. That was the direction I was leaning, but didn't want to pull the trigger as I simply haven't installed more than 2GB as all my previous machines were not really built with Vista (or any other iteration) in mind.

You know, I love ettouffe (and beer).  I went to Copepland's last night and had some shrimp ettoffe, because I didn't know it was crawfish season.....

Will fix that tonight!  I'll ask around at the conferences I'm attending this morning.

Thanks, and I'll let you know!  Chukar, did you live here at one time?

Oh and TB, you could probably get the WIndows 7 beta 64 and run a dual boot if you wanted to see how it compares to XP. If you flew BlackShark that would be an alomost mandatory route to take, but in other sims you'll be fine with XP.

Just saw this GOZR. I would have had I known. Sorry.

Is there a loose schedule right now to try to get some people together at specified dates/times?

Not really a schedule TB, a few of us have just been on every night. I won't be able to keep that up for long, but it's been fun!
