OK figured I'd start my own thread on the new system I'm gathering parts for.

Question to the Guru's..

I already bought an eVGA X58 LE board.  I just noticed that it has the 3gb sata...  The GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R is around the same price and has USB 3.0 and the 6gb Sata.  I have not opened the eVGA and can return it.  Question is, should I get the Gigabyte board instead of the eVGA one?  The SSD drive I will be buying has the 6gb Sata on it....  Anyone hear anything about OCing on this board at all??

Thanks!!

Well think of one thing.. The next generation of Flight sim from M$ is restarting again..
A  EVGA "LE" is not really what you want. you want an EVGA for it's strengh and SLI's + physics capabilities
You rather get something with "simple" in mind but with ok performance get a gygabyte with one Vcard card, it will run all good but not very good Wink but now since the i920 is getting old and quads maybe is better getting something ok and save for the next.

For me only i'll stay away from those board as mush as i can.. getting a 3x way with your 6 GB and 3.0 USB would be the way..

But first what do you have now ?

You understand that bying a i920 with gyga is basically not a late system already.. ( Sad )

GOZR,
I already have the i7 920.  It will have to do for now...It's a huge upgrade for me anyway.  I've done a bit of homework and decided on the Asus P6X58D Premium mobo.  I trust ASUS...read some reviews and it looks like they have a winner with this board.  The board will also support DDR3 2000 as well as the new hexagon processor that will be coming out so I will be able to upgrade in a couple years.  Oveclocking to 4ghz has been effortless from all the reviews I've seen and it has plenty space for the Megahalems cooler.  The only negative with this board is the price...  I'll be beringing back the eVGA board this weekend to Microcenter and picking up this board instead.

Yes I'm aware some of the hardware I will be buying, mainly the proc isn't cutting edge anymore, however...it's the most cutting edge that my wallet can deal with at the moment considering the SSD's and all I'm about to buy.

Cutting-edge is relative anyway...as you know. Going from a dual core (for example) to an i7 920 with a strong OC is like night and day as long as your other hardware mirrors that level of upgrade.

Mine is a year old next month and it still feels new.  Smiley

That's awesome TB!  Gives me hope!  Upgradability is key to me.  If I can slap faster ram and upcoming processors in it, I'm set!

Well a strong OC!!.. i think this is what is a eak! I don't think Rah is a fanatic of hard core OC

Asus P6X58D = 3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (at x16/x8/x8 or x16/x16/x1 mode)
This mean if you have an SLI and you old Video card as a physix  your last card will be running only 1 .

It seems to be a good board..

An advice is to save money in block and not buy little by little ..
( Don't place to much faith in Ram Wink )

What is your old Video card?

Ok GOZR...  List the components you would go with...  I can't seem to win...

It's not that I can't buy all the parts right now...it's the fact that I'm not sure what to get..  While I have the money to get it all, I don't want to spend $3k on a computer...I'm the sole breadwinner in the house.  Have to think of the family first...I don't have a boatload of disposable income..

Old card is an eVGA 8800GTX 768MB

The 8800 GTX is still a pretty good card. but i presume you will keep it in the system to have a second PC at hand ( server or home #2 pc )

Quick question..can you give back the 920 and get a 930 for $199?

I would go with Nvidia for sure on the VGA GTX 480 (1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 a big +).. no ATI.

I hated Asus before i had so many trouble but ... the "X58 serie" seems to be an excellent mobo and it still does at list full 2x16 witch is good and ready 32mn cpu's.

My choice would be EVGA classified E760 + some kind of Creative X-FI Fat4lity + i7 930 but it will be more expensive.

You can't go wrong with both..

Yeah see...it's not that I'm not "elite" or hardcore enough...it's the pricing.  Don't have that much disposable income to just throw at pricey hardware.   Cry

Yea understandable.. what is the budget ?

We have a very different approch of hardware if i don't have enough cash for some good hardware well i'll get it used .

No matter what do it smartly and do not get one year old hardware if you by new... but maybe get new hardware used.. Wink
