ATI 5870.  Keep the profits in Texas.

Absolute best card for ROF - both for graphics appearance and speed.  Don't know about FSX, and since that seems to be your main concern I'd look for FSX users with ATI 5800 series cards and see what their experience is.

There are good and bad to both solutions - it really depends on the app (as you know).  FSX seems pretty complex with many add-ons.  I don't have it.  All the guys I know that fly FSX - do so on Nvidea.

Chukar just built a new system, and I think he has a 5850 or 5870 - hopefully he'll weigh in here too.

Strongly disagree !!!
ATI 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
GTX  1536MB 384-bit GDDR5

Both DX11

The 1GB Vcards are already limited in ROF ( a good setting with out any post effect is already at 80+ % maxed out on the Vram ), having more Vram it will open the potential to add all the extra eye candy in ROF or other sims.
Now since you will load all this extra sceneries into FSX. the GTX is more future proof.

Vram is very very important in Flightsim and the GTX is a newer tech etc.. and better and faster card ( the 5870 is a good card too ) and with out all the ATI compability troubles.

I know Gozr, if it's not Nvidea and it's not SLI you disagree - or someone else is stupid - or wasting money.  I understand.  I knew that going in - which is why I didn't post in this thread until Rah asked.

I get it.  I got it months ago.

I still strongly recommend that anyone who is looking for a new video card - look at ALL options.

Now, Rah - Gozr's has some experiences I don't - which is why you should listen to him - concerning FSX.

Gozr and I definitely agree on one thing - Need a minimum of 1 GB Vram - whichever option you take.  If you can get more than 1GB it might not hurt - as long as its contigously addressable (not in banks like GTX295).

Maybe Rah, you should post the cards you are actually looking at and we can give better advice.

What are you talking about!.. No body is stupid to my eyes at list ... i just state my opinion about cards not personal and here we are talking of none SLI..  and being real. I hope to have the same in return if i ask for an advice, info or knowledge...
I have my experience and hardware manipulation knowledge.
That about it.. and trust me i'm very very nice and quiet...

I'm trying to suggest what is best for the future since Rha doesn't appear to change PC every year. It's not about feeling or something else..
If like i was saying before ATI was better until the New Nvidia came out with some new goodies under their belt.. ATI or Nvidia i can care less really or where they are from, i care about how the card is and will be in the short future for the apps at task.
Rha asked me too so i just say it... And me too i'm trying to not get too involved .

I test in basically all the flight sims.. Condor/Il2/FSX/RoF/DCS/FC1/Fc2/BoP/F4...

Edited: noticed that we care for you Rha !! Wink and we all want you to get something that will make you happy...

I have to quit posting from work when people are sitting in my office and arguing over hardware...  makes me contentious....

Gozr, you said something earlier about used cards.

As I thought about this on the way home, the best advice to Rah maybe to see if he can find a used GTX-285.  Great card - I think more robust than 280 (a little) - same performance but lower power draw and heat.

That way, you don't have to shell out 350-500 dollars while the market is changing.
These new boards don't offer significant performance boosts across the board.  As long as you have 1GB or more of VRAM - you can turn most things up pretty high.

The reason that I like my ATI better than my Nvidea 280 for ROF, is that I can select AA modes and settings which completely eliminate terrain "shimmering" or pixelization at far ranges over the terrain.  In the beginning it didn't bother me as much as it did Eco, but now it just drives me insane.  There is no way to get non-shimmering with Nvidea, AFAIK.  Maybe something in the new cards/drivers might address this but I have not seen it yet.

Yeah, that was the big reason I kept it.  Look up ATI AA supersampling vs Nvidea AA supersampling.  Different algorithms.  This is what most of the ATI owners in ROF have been raving about.

Well Rah we will be mother board bro’s.   My system also uses the I7 920, 6g Corsair Dominator, and ATI 5870.  Unfortunately I haven’t over clocked anything or run any performance tests so I can’t really give you anything to compare it to.   It just runs.  I have fairly aggressive settings in FSX and everything else I set to max.   With one weird exception in IL2, running graphics in perfect causing the text to be unreadable when choosing your airfield making it unplayable so you have to set it in Excellent mode.   I haven’t tried the catalyst 10.3 drivers yet.

I chose the 5870 because it was clearly the best at the time and Eyefinity enabled.   However now the GTX 480 is out now and beats the 5870 in most categories, but it does come with some overhead.
As the resolution goes up the differences becomes minimal.  The card runs hot, it uses a substantially more power and a bit more expensive.  I don’t have a clue as to the multi monitor support for it.  But all in all if I had to buy today I might go with the 480 but I would look in to the multi monitor support because hopefully someday I will have that.

And get a windows 7 x64...  x64 a must forget about 32 bit now and WIndows XP..
