I'm not getting it.

I'm not having most of the problems that others are.  While many of these issues are Nvidea specific - some of them are reported by ATI users.

Current ATI/AMD drivers are Cat 11-3 which I was unable to use a few weeks ago.  All ATI Cats over 10.10 (which introduced large changes to the drivers) could not be used by my system.  At first I thought it was an issue with the drivers, but as 4 more Cat's (10-11,10-12,11-1,11-2,11-3) were released they all caused my card to produce grey crash screens.

I looked at the Vbios that was installed on my 5870 and saw that it was an early one.  I contacted Sapphire via emial for a new bios flash - and they sent it to me with instructions.  I flashed my Vbios from DOS boot window (actually ended up having to force flash it) - and it took the 11-3 cats and works fine now.

At one point with the older drivers (10-10), I had a "box" of texture corruption in my sea and ground textures.  After I was able to update everything, this vanished with driver updates.
