You think the cows are mad. . wait until you have proteinaceous infectious particles migrating through your dorsal root ganglion and your CNS, and ultimately throughout your entire body. For those into sci-fi you may be into the reality of the novel infectious agent known as a Prion/proteinaceous infection particle. Its not alive so it cant be killed, the predominantly alpha-helical character is eliminated and converted to a beta pleated sheet conformation which is the most energetically favorable and therefore most stable conformation of the tertiary structure, and al quaternary structure is eliminated entirely this means in effect that the proteins are denatured. . this denaturation is infectious and any normal proteins that are encountered will be converted to the rogue form, which then has the ability to do the same thing to others. The fact that this agent has no RNA or DNA, is not alive, and is already denatured means it’s pretty unstoppable. ALL current practices known for disinfection are incapable of killing it, the current practice of digging big pits, burning and burying these infected livestock does NOTHING to harm or "kill" the infectivity of the Prion, and this is the established practice that is emplyed. Studies were done and the information submitted to public record about the maximum temps that occurred in these fire pits, this value was ultimately increased 10 fold, and the infectious agents buried for 3 years, and when assayed they had lost none of their infective capability. . . horizontal transmission of these agents is carried out by an unknown mechanism, suggested to be many things such as flies landing on a corpse, feces, foodstuffs, also there has been studies to suggest that groundwater contamination via excrement and those big char pits could also be a factor. The dormant period of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (AKA nvCJD) is from 5-20 years with the factors contributing to this variation most likely being wide-ranging but probably based on frequency and quantity of exposure to animal products. Typically mechanically recovered meat products confer the greatest rates of infection, so hamburger, sausages, hot dogs, pepperoni etc. reason being that this material often is unusable for other samples of meat, and is mechanically ripped from the skeleton around the vertebrae, and typically this meat contains large amounts of dorsal root ganglion (nervous tissue) which contains concentrated prion proteins. The prion protein is itself believed to be an immune response agent that protects your brain and CNS and is concentrated in the cerebrospinal fluids, the liver, the intestines, the stomach, and any area with a high concentration of nervous tissue. Iatrogenic causes of CJD are most likely underreported as they typically occur in patients that have already been diagnosed with another CNS related ailment, and the number of individuals in the medical field who understand these prion diseases is extremely small. Because of this the tools that caused the infection are typically reused, which will confer the disease to all subsequent patients, despite long term sterilization, autoclaving, ionizing radiation, treatment with chloroform etc etc etc., and in fact teh infectivity and stability of the structure is even enhanced via a cysteine and disulfide (very strong bonds) bond strengthening when the prions encounter formaldehyde which is often used to sterilize equipment.Though reported iatrogenic infections are on the rise, the greatest threat still comes form teh consumption of animal products from infected animals, equipment that has EVER touched an infected animal, land that was used for an infected animal, and perhaps soil, manure, water fencing, farm equipment. . . . Ok .. it just occurred to me that I am rambling. . .if you read this far you must be interested in this. . ..so just talk to m on GV and I promise to never mention it again here.Oh. . in short. . .it cant be killed, it spreads pretty much no matter what, albeit slowly. . .so the real issue isnt about stopping the import of beef. . .but rather tracing the initial source, and preparing for its emergence here when (not if) it shows up.Incase ya missed it in the first place:http://www.msnbc.com/news/915987.aspdarn. . they changed the thread. . . and now its toa new page. . .oh wellBTW. . .the majority of this information is incorrect, and much of it borders on outright liesS!TX-EcoDragonBlack 1TX Squadron XO
